Walkable demo
Japanese School and City Street
Walk in off a shopping street, through the school gate and the entrance passage, past two cut away classrooms, the covered walkway, the bicycle shelters, the gymnasium and the running track.
About
A school and the shopping street outside its gate, laid out as one place you can walk end to end in about two minutes.
You start on the pavement opposite the gate. Fourteen shopfront bays run behind you on the four metre street grid, each with an upper floor and a tiled or standing seam roof stacked on it, with the road, its kerbs and its pavements tiling between. Across the carriageway the mesh perimeter fence runs the width of the grounds with the gate set into it, cherry trees behind it in blossom and bare.
The classroom block is a three metre module kit: sixteen floor slabs, window and corridor walls on the street elevation, plain walls at the ends and either side of the entrance passage. The south elevation is deliberately left off over the middle six bays. The demo walk has no vertical movement and a roofed room cannot be photographed from inside, so rather than build a sealed interior the block is cut away: both classrooms stand open to the yard with their desks, chairs, blackboards, teacher desks, lecterns, clocks and class signs in full view from the path. The entrance passage is the one roofed piece, four ceiling slabs over a way that is open at both ends. The two stair flights inside it are scenery: there is no upper floor to reach.
The yard behind holds the covered walkway and its two spurs, flower beds, drinking fountains, vending machines, three bicycle shelters, twelve racks and twenty four bicycles, the gymnasium shell, two incinerator sheds, twenty two cherry trees and two straights of marked running track with ball stop nets behind them.
What moves. Fifteen of the forty six models carry clips and all of them stand beside the path. The gate leaves swing open. The classroom sliding doors and the window sashes open and close, as do the shop doors and the closed shutter on the street. The vending machine flap, the shoe locker doors, the cleaning locker, the teacher desk drawers and the incinerator shed door all open. The ceiling fans spin and every bicycle turns both wheels on its own axles.
What does not. Everything else is static geometry: walls, slabs, roofs, road, fence, trees, track and the gymnasium. The catalogue holds no skinned meshes, so there are no people anywhere in it, and the gymnasium is a shell with nothing behind its glazing. Placing the whole pack means the page downloads all forty six models, which is the trade for a street and a school in one scene.
Every shop fascia, notice board and class sign in this pack is blank or invented. No real school, business, product or story is referenced anywhere in it.
Every piece here is a published model from the pack, placed by hand. Walk with the keys or touch, and approach a piece to see it move if it has animation. Colliders, navigation and gameplay are yours to add.
Points of interest
The school gate
Two concrete posts, a blank name plate and a pair of picket leaves that swing open as you reach them. The mesh fence runs off both ways to the corners of the grounds.
School Gate (Japanese School and City Street)The street outside
Fourteen bays of shopfront face the gate across an eight metre street: a noodle bar, a laundrette, a second hand bookshop and a shuttered unit, each with a flat above it and a tiled or metal roof on top. Every fascia is blank.
Shopfront Bay, Ramen Shop (Japanese School and City Street)Entrance passage
The block is cut through in the middle. Shoe locker banks line the passage, their doors opening as you pass, and the only roofed part of the demo is the four ceiling slabs over your head.
Shoe Locker Bank (Japanese School and City Street)A classroom, cut away
The south elevation is left off over six bays, so both rooms stand open to the yard: twelve desks and chairs each, a blackboard and chalk tray, a teacher desk whose drawers pull out, a lectern, a clock and a ceiling fan turning overhead.
Student Desk (Japanese School and City Street)Covered walkway
Eight bays of covered way run the length of the block with two spurs turning off into the yard, flower beds along the near side and a drinking fountain at each end.
Covered Walkway Section (Japanese School and City Street)Bicycle shelters
Three shelters, four free standing racks and eight bicycles here, of twenty four parked across the demo. Both wheels on every bicycle are a named node and turn on their own axle as you come near.
Bicycle Shelter with Racks (Japanese School and City Street)The gymnasium
Sixteen metres of ribbed panel wall on a concrete plinth with a clerestory band and a glazed entrance under its canopy. It is a shell: there is no interior behind the glass.
School Gymnasium Shell (Japanese School and City Street)Track and backstop
Thirty four sections of marked track edge make the two straights across the back of the grounds, with three ball stop nets behind them and an incinerator shed in the far corner.
