About
A whole courtyard complex from one kit, built as architecture and furnishing. The arcade is a 3 m module system: a bay with a 2.6 m pointed arch on square piers, a tiled dado, a carved band and its own flat roof and parapet, plus a corner piece that turns the walk on an angle pier, so an arcade of any size closes round a court that stays open to the sky. The prayer hall is an open sided hypostyle bay whose half arches crown on its own joints, so a row of them reads as a complete arcade with a column every 3 m, with a freestanding column for the end of a row, a qibla wall section carrying a tiled mihrab niche under a muqarnas hood, and a half dome hood to roof a recess. Above the roofline are a large ribbed turquoise dome and a smaller plaster one on panelled octagonal drums, the squinch and the muqarnas corbel that carry a dome over a square room, and a minaret in stackable pieces: a tiled base, 3 m octagonal shaft sections, a balcony corbelled on a muqarnas ring with turned lattice panels, and a domed cap. The rest of the kit builds the place round them: courtyard paving, plaster floors, flat roof slabs, wall bays, a corner pier, a stepped entrance portal, boundary wall runs and a gate whose leaves swing, desert ground modules in two tones and a sand drift. The court is furnished with an octagonal ablution fountain, a water channel and runnel, a well head whose windlass winds, a cistern cover, stone benches, a shade canopy on poles, a courtyard tree in a stone well, a date palm, a sundial and a pigeon cote. Inside are the madrasa cell fronts whose doors swing, low study desks, cushions, a shelf run of plain bound volumes, a book chest and a pen box whose lids lift, a folding book rest, matting rolls and laid mat runs, hanging lamps that bob on their chains, standing lamps, candle stands, a minbar with a muqarnas canopy, folding screens in three lattice patterns, an iron window grille, tiled dado runs, carved plaster bands and painted ceiling coffers. Rigid node transform clips only, no skinning and no people. Water, hanging chain, rope, matting, cloth and flame are all modelled static, because fluid, flexible material and fire need a shader or a joint per element and neither is reachable with one rigid node transform; the minbar, the shoe rack, the cistern cover and the window grille are static too, because they have no mechanism and none was invented for them. Everything is invented: no real mosque, madrasa, city, institution or identifiable building is reproduced or named. Every tile panel, carved band, lattice and frieze is an abstract geometric or interlace repeat, with no inscription, calligraphy or writing in any script anywhere on the pack, and there is no figurative depiction of a person or an animal in it: the pack has no skinned meshes and no character geometry at all.
