Walkable demo
The Newspaper Works
Walk a working newspaper plant: the paper store, the rotary press line under its overhead drive, the composing and plate rooms, the finishing end and the editorial corner.
About
A 48 by 36 metre works floor laid out as one process, walked end to end in under two minutes.
What is placed. You start in the paper store among the reel stands, floor reels, skids and the reel trolley, and look east down the floor. The press hall is next: the rotary line runs drive unit, two printing units and the folder in one row, fed by reel stands and the web path roller sets, with the flatbed cylinder presses, platen jobbing presses, the proofing presses, ink fountains, ink cans and roller racks behind them. The composing room holds the linecasting machines, a run of type case cabinets, the composing and imposing stones with galleys and chases laid on them, galley racks, furniture racks, make-up tables and the compositors' stools. The plate room casts and racks the curved plates. The finishing end takes the sheets through the guillotines, folding tables, bundling presses and wire stitchers onto skids for the loading door, and the front counter with its hatch and news boards faces the street. The editorial corner sits on office floor with the editors' desks, typewriters, telephones, copy spikes, the subs tables, pigeonholes, filing cabinets, the light box, the photo enlargers and the wall clocks. Line shafting runs over one bay with belt drops to the machines and the motor at its end. Waste bins, hand trucks, floor drains and stacked paper dress the whole floor.
386 placements of 56 distinct models, brick, window and door wall bays around the perimeter, and the works and office floor tiles underfoot. The floor is deliberately open topped: the demo walk has no vertical movement, so a roofed works floor would be neither reachable nor photographable. The line shafting is the only overhead geometry.
What moves. 27 of the models carry clips and every one of them stands beside the path. The press cylinders, the reels on their stands, the web path rollers, the folder, the proofing and flatbed presses and the wire stitchers all spin. The platen jobbing press closes and opens. The guillotine blade drops. Type case drawers, the plate casting box, the bundling press, the editors' desk drawers, the filing cabinets, the photo enlarger, the door wall bays and the counter hatch all open and close. The typewriter carriage slides. The line shafting and its pulleys spin, driven from the electric motor. The hand truck and reel trolley wheels roll.
What does not move, and why. The paper web, the drive belts, the cabling and the ink are static. Flexible material and fluid need a joint per element or a shader, and neither is reachable with the one rigid node transform this catalogue animates with. There are no people anywhere: the pack has no skinned meshes.
No words anywhere. Nothing in this pack models a glyph. Every galley, proof, poster, news board and typewriter page is a blank lead body or an abstract rule bar, so no surface here carries a masthead, a headline or a name, and none is meant to.
Every piece here is a published model from the pack, placed by hand. Walk with the keys or touch, and approach a piece to see it move if it has animation. Colliders, navigation and gameplay are yours to add.
Points of interest
Paper store
Reels come in on the trolley and go up on the stands. Each stand spins its reel and the web runs from here down the floor to the press hall.
Reel Stand (Printing Press and Newspaper Office)The rotary line
Drive unit, two printing units and the folder in one line. The cylinders spin and the folder turns. The paper web between them is static: a flexible sheet needs a joint per element.
Rotary Press Printing Unit (Printing Press and Newspaper Office)Composing room
Lines are cast here, dressed on the stones and locked up in chases. Every galley, proof and page in this pack is a blank lead body: no glyph is modelled anywhere.
Linecasting Machine (Printing Press and Newspaper Office)Plate room
The casting box opens and closes, and the curved plates stack on the racks before they go back onto the press cylinders.
Plate Casting Box (Printing Press and Newspaper Office)Finishing end
The guillotine blade drops, the folding tables take the sheets, and the bundling press and wire stitchers finish them onto skids for the loading door.
Guillotine (Printing Press and Newspaper Office)Editorial corner
Desks, a subs table and pigeonholes on the office floor. The typewriter carriage slides and the drawers open. Every sheet on the desk is blank stock.
Editors Desk (Printing Press and Newspaper Office)Overhead drive
One bay is driven from above: the shafting and its pulleys spin and the belts drop to the machines. The belts themselves are static, a moving belt needs a joint per link.
Line Shafting Bay (Printing Press and Newspaper Office)The front counter
The counter hatch opens onto the street door, with news boards behind it. The boards carry abstract rule bars, never words.
