About
What is placed
A covered market hall about 12 by 16 metres, laid on its own paving bays inside brick and clerestory walls. Cast iron columns carry three roof truss bays with glazed rooflights, an entrance arch with gates opens the south end, and a service door breaks the west wall.
Inside, a wall of lock up stall units faces three rows of open stalls with counters, canopies and back shelving, plus a corner unit. The traders are pitched: a produce slope with crates, fruit and veg, bakery and haberdashery trays, preserves and cheese, ceramics, flowers, a fabric bolt rack, a hanging stock rail, second hand books, vinyl, plant pots, hardware pegboard and a luggage rack. Counters carry scales, tills, a glass display case and a cash box. The concourse inside the entrance has counter modules, a cafe table, benches, planters, bins, a recycling station, an information board and wayfinding, with hanging trader signs above the aisles, pigeon netting under the eaves and a clock on the gable.
What moves
Roller shutters on the lock up units run up and down, the entrance gates and the service door swing, the glass display case slides, the till drawer and the cash box open, the counter scales tip their pan, and the stock trolley, cleaning trolley and market barrow roll. Clips play as you walk up to each piece.
What does not move and why
Awning fabric, the pigeon netting, the produce and the cloth are static geometry: none of it is reachable with the rigid node transforms this library uses, and faking the drape would cost a consumer more than it gives. There are no traders or shoppers in the hall because nothing here is skinned. Every stall name is invented and abstract: no real brand or trader is named anywhere in the pack.
