## About

A working village smithy on its own four metre floor, wall and timber frame modules, open fronted and open topped so the whole shop is walkable and in view from the yard.

**What is placed.** Three bays run along the back wall. The forge bay has the stone hearth with its hood and flue, the chimney stack carrying up outside, the double bellows on their frame, the great anvil on an oak stump, the quench trough, slack tubs, hammer and tong racks, a swage block and the smith’s bench with its chisel trays and fuller boards. The armourer’s bay has the dishing stump, the planishing stake, a helm and a breastplate on their forms, the mail ring drum and the riveting bench. The finishing bay has the treadle grindstone, the polishing wheel, the leg and bench vices, the draw bench and wire dies, the nail header and the file and tool boards on the walls. The shop bay opens on to the yard through the shutter counter, with the counter of stock, the ledger desk, the hanging scale and racks of finished ironwork behind it.

Outside, the yard is stocked the way a working one is: coal store, scuttles and charcoal heaps under the lean-to, bar stock racks, billet stacks and barrels of blanks along the boundary, a second bench, grindstone and set of armourer’s forms out in the light, water butts, farrier’s boxes and hand carts of ironwork. The blades on the racks are unsharpened blanks and bar stock, which is what a forge holds: the pack’s output is craft ironwork, tools, fittings, horseshoes and plate.

**What moves.** The bellows compress and open, the treadle grindstone and the polishing wheel spin, the leg and bench vice jaws close, the shutter counter front drops, the stable door swings, the bench, riveting bench, ledger desk and shoeing box lids and drawers open, the sand and flux bin lid lifts, the mail ring drum turns, the hanging scale pan rocks and the hand cart wheels roll.

**What does not move, and why.** Fire, smoke, glowing metal and water are static: fire, fluid and flexible material need a shader or a joint per element, and none of that is reachable with the rigid node transforms this library uses. The glow on hot iron is an emissive looking material and the pack embeds no lights, so a demo lights the scene itself. The leather apron on its hook and the chain of the hanging scale hang still for the same reason. There are no smiths and no horses, because nothing here is skinned.
